WORKSAFEBC JOINT HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE TRAINING 8 HOURS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I know if my business requires a joint health and safety committee?
If your workplace has 20 or more workers overall within your business, you need a joint health and safety committee. This includes any workplace where there are 20 or more workers employed at the workplace for longer than a month. WorkSafeBC Officers may also order that a joint committee be established in any other workplace or even if you have less than 20 workers. VIEW WORKSAFEBC FAQ DOCUMENT HERE.
Do all safety committee members need to be trained and certified?
Yes. Starting April 3, 2017, all new joint committee members must receive eight hours of training and instruction.

How many members do I need on my committee?
A joint committee must have at least four members, and at least half of the members must be worker representatives. For the purpose of a joint committee, a worker representative must be someone who does not exercise managerial functions. Managerial functions generally relate to the overall direction at the workplace and may include disciplining workers and representing management in labour relations matters. A WorkSafeBC Officer may require you to have more than 4 members on your committee depending on the size of your business, number of employees, number of departments, number of locations and hazard rating. We recommend you have at least 6 members on your committee as a minimum (2 management reps, 4 employee reps). 1 management rep and the other employee rep can be trained as alternates.
What is the difference between your online self study course compared to a classroom course?
Our online JHSC 8 Hour self study course is a more cost effective and time effective form of training to obtain your JHSC certification. It is ideal for businesses who either have a set budget and/or cannot have employees leave their everyday positions to attend a full day 8 hour course.

Our online self study course meets and exceeds all WorkSafeBC JHSC training requirements. This online course is the same course we teach in classroom - however - it is self study, meaning no instructor is available. You must study yourself. This course is a self paced course and has no time limit for completion. Students can complete their studying on their own time schedule or the employer can provide a deadline to each participant.

Our online self study JHSC 8 Hour course consists of videos, powerpoints, sample forms and worksafebc booklets. All study material and exams will be automatically forwarded to your provided email address upon purchase. Download the study material and forward the study material to the other students (if required). Complete the 3 final exams and forward all the exam(s) pages to the email provided to you - by PDF scan document or by taking pictures of each exam page (information will be provided on the final exam copies). One of our instructors will mark the exams within 1 to 2 business days and email you their certification cards. This is not a pass or fail course (everyone passes). If anyone does not do well on any of the exams, our instructor will email the participant and advise on which questions need to be re-looked at.
Do you offer a 8 hour classroom course with an instructor?
Yes we do! Our 8 hour classroom course is conducted by our instructor in one full day. This course is only scheduled through one day (8 hours) and cannot be subdivided into two days. It is scheduled from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. This course is conducted via the zoom platform only. You may have each of your members access their own PC during the course or you can situate them in a room and project our instructor from a TV setting. Pricing is $1699.00 + GST per course, you may have up to 10 people attend. Each additional person above 10 is $49.95 per person. After each course our instructor will email you all members certificates. Contact Us to schedule a classroom course.
How do I set up a joint health and safety committee?
The first step is selecting your worker and employer representatives, and providing them with the necessary training and instruction. The newly formed committee must then establish its own rules of procedure, sometimes called terms of reference. These rules must set out how the committee will perform its duties and functions.

A joint committee must have at least four members, and at least half of the members must be worker representatives or you may have more employee reps than management reps (i.e. 1 manager and 3 employees). But, you CANNOT have more management reps than employee reps on your committee (i.e. you cannot have 3 managers and 1 employee). Management reps can be selected by the employer, however, Employee reps must be ELECTED by the workers. For the purpose of a joint committee, a employee representative must be someone who does not exercise managerial functions. Managerial functions generally relate to the overall direction at the workplace and may include disciplining workers and representing management in labour relations matters.
