According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code of Alberta, it’s the employer’s responsibility to implement an occupational health and safety (OHS) program to prevent employee workplace injury and disease. This ensures that the employer is exercising due diligence in taking steps to meet with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code of Alberta. View Alberta OHS Regulations HERE.
Employers with 20 or more workers must have a formal health and safety program that is developed in consultation with the joint work site health and safety committee or representative. A formal program is a very detailed program which includes policies and safe work procedures. Employers with fewer than 20 workers are also required to have a program, but this program can be less detailed in the form of policies only.
